Important Things You Should Know About Wedding Vendors

Thursday, August 30th, 2007

By Michael Brito Even in the bridal industry, there will always be shady people who might be looking to take advantage of a young couple getting married. It could be a wedding photographer who nickels and dimes for every little thing, or even a high priced wedding consultant who has dollar signs in her eyes. To avoid any misunderstandings, headaches and really bad experiences, follow these tips below and you’re wedding planning will be worry-free, for the most part. Establish a contract; this is really a no brainer. If you are dealing with a reputable business, you will find that this is often standard procedure before engaging in any business. Remember; do not to assume anything, always read the fine print and the terms and conditions. If it seems too good to be true, it probably is. Do not sign anything until you full understand what you are signing for. It is also important to consider cancellation policies. What happens if you wish to cancel a service you have booked? Will there be fees involved? Dear God, what if the wedding is called off? You have to be sure that there is an escape clause for extreme circumstances such as these. As much as we dont want to think such horrid thoughts, things do happen all the time. When dealing with caterers or reception facilities, find out if there are additional fees for set up and clean up. Do not be afraid to ask about charges for cake cutting, coat rooms and corkage fees. All costs should be itemized in the contract and request that no additional fees are to be added after these fees have been agreed upon. Be sure to inquire about overtime fees. Whether this is for your reception, limousine service or any other service on the day, you do not want to be slapped upside the veil with an unexpected charge for overtime fees. Play it safe and find out what options you have if your wedding runs overtime. Nine times out of ten, they always do. Be cautious of a deal that seems too good to be true. If you shop around, ask questions and do your homework, you should have a general idea of how much a certain service will cost. If you find an offer that is suspiciously cheap, don’t be afraid to ask why. Most likely, its not too good to be true; rather, the service is simply horrible. Double bookings can sometimes happen, particularly during the peak wedding seasons. If you know that another wedding is booked for the same day in the same room as yours, be sure that you specify your exact time, from which hour to which hour you require the room. Remember to allow for enough time to clean-up between weddings. Hopefully, someone on staff will manage their time effectively to avoid any awkward situations.Where possible, it is advisable to work with a professional wedding photographer who specializes in weddings. Dont settle for a friends cousins best friend who happens to shoot photography as a hobby part time. A professional photographer will have the experience to beautifully capture your wedding day in each picture taken. Dont be obsessive, dont compromise, dont forget about your budget, and dont be afraid to ask for help. Just because you are planning the most important day of your entire life, dont get too emotional and do not be pressured by slick vendors or high pressure sales tactics. There are enough quality wedding professionals to choose from you do not want to regret one of these decisions later. The Reference Check: How People Lose Job Offers At This Stage

Wednesday, August 29th, 2007

By Carl Mueller The reference check is probably the most ignored part of the job search process. As a recruiter Im always amazed how many job searchers consider the reference check to be a moot point given how little time and effort they spend on this part of their job search. Typically, references are completed by a company (or recruiter) directly before they are about to make a job offer. Companies arent in the process of creating extra work for themselves so they tend to only proceed with references when they are about to make an offer to someone or in rare cases, when they are trying to decide between two candidates they consider to be equal. In this case, the references could be the deciding point to determine which of the two candidates gets the job! There are probably two big myths surrounding the reference check and they can cost you a job because they are both wrong: Reference Check Myth 1: Once youve made it to the reference check stage, youve pretty much got the job offer wrapped up. The assumption here seems to be that the reference check is unimportant. This couldnt be further from the truth. The purpose of a reference check is for a hiring manager to verify your experience and to verify the positive thoughts that they have about you with an independent source, someone who has worked with you in the past. A poor reference check can and most likely will cost you a job. Reference Check Myth 2: There is no such thing as a bad reference check. Uh, yes there is Trust me, Ive completed a bad reference check for some of my job candidates on more than one occasion. The best bad reference check was for a woman whose former boss told me that he refused to provide a reference check for her because she hadnt left his company on good terms and he wanted nothing to do with her! Apparently, his opinion of this lady was not quite as high as she thought it would beNeedless to say I stopped helping this lady with her job search as soon as this happened. If I had been a hiring manager about to offer her a job and Id gotten this response during a reference check, do you think I would have then made her a job offer? Neither do I. The only reference check you should be getting is a glowing one. Otherwise, why would you utilize this person as a reference? Of course, no one is perfect and youre certainly not asking your references to lie about your background. But if you use someone as a reference who refuses to even provide a reference check for you or gives you a really poor one, you should expect to lose out on jobs. How should you organize your references? Be sure to do the following at a minimum:1. Put together a list of perhaps 4 references ideally. Most companies will do 3 reference checks so having a spare person listed helps if one of the other references you mentioned are hard to get hold of, if they are on holiday, etc. 2. Choose business references who know you well and who will honestly answer questions regarding your background in detail. Try to avoid people who give short yes and no answers to questions if possible. As a recruiter, Ive done references where getting a detailed answer from the person is like pulling teeth, which is not helpful to your chances at getting the job! 3. Let each of your references know BEFORE they are going to be called to do a reference check for you. This way, they wont be surprised when they get the call and you can tell them in advance which company will be calling them, what job you are being considered for and so that you can let them know which of your skills they will be asked about. 4. Dont forget to thank your references after youve gotten the job. You might need to utilize them as references again in the future so dont be a stranger and forget to keep in touch with them. The reference check stage of the job search process cant be underestimated even though many people do this. People do lose out on job offers at this stage and in many cases, probably dont even realize it! On that note, if you find you are performing well in interviews, make it to the reference check stage, but then dont get a job offer, you might need to look at who you are using as references and figure out if there is a problem. If one or more of your references arent giving you a glowing reference, you need to know about it so that you can find out why, and then find another person to use in their place. If you have put this much time and effort to get this close to getting a new job, dont risk throwing it away now at the reference check stage. Vitamin B12 and Weight Loss

Saturday, August 25th, 2007

By Shane Woods Cobalamin or as it is better known, vitamin B12 is one of the vital nutrients our bodies need in order to work properly. It is necessary to perform many of the body’s more important tasks, including the making of DNA during cell division and the healthy formation of red blood cells. Vitamin B12 is known as the “energy vitamin” because it gives a real energy boost. It is used to remedy fatigue and it speeds up the metabolism. Red blood cells are also responsible for producing hemoglobin, the part of the blood that takes oxygen from the lungs and transports it to all the different parts of the body. Vitamin B12 has many functions and uses but does it help people lose weight? What is the link between Vitamin B12 and weight loss? Vitamin B12 Injections and Weight Loss Some people might go to a clinic to get vitamin B12 shots. These shots are administered directly into the muscle, allowing for better absorption. People who get these shots mainly suffer from chronic fatigue syndrome or vitamin B12 deficiency. They might also claim that taking these shots help them to lose weight. However, Vitamin B12 injections by themselves do not directly induce weight loss, nor are they intended to. So why do people who get them lose weight? There are many factors to take into consideration. Vitamin B12 causes the metabolism to speed up, which in turn increases weight loss. People who go to get injections tend to be more conscious of their health and are already on a vegetarian, or other weight loss diet. Vitamin B12 shots give a tremendous boost of energy. This generally helps people to maintain their diets, and motivates them to exercise and increase physical activity. Vitamin B12 also helps to fight stress and depression, symptoms which are sometimes associated with weight gain. While vitamin B12 shots can be a great benefit to some, particularly those with Vitamin B12 deficiency, there can be some negative side effects when taken excessively or along with certain other substances. There is also a risk for those who have certain pre-existing conditions. It’s important to consult a physician before undergoing vitamin B12 injections. Vitamin B12 and Dieting When undergoing any new weight loss program it is important to make sure that the diet is well balanced and contains all of the essential nutrients. This of course includes vitamin B12. Food sources rich in vitamin B12 include: - Meat - Poultry - Milk and other dairy products - Eggs - Fish Since the only reliable source of vitamin B12 are from animals those practicing a vegetarian or vegan diet will have to get their vitamin B12 from supplements. If a person doesn’t get enough vitamin B12 they may develop a deficiency. Vitamin B12 Deficiency Vitamin B12 deficiency can become a serious health threat. The body can normally stock up many years supply of vitamin B12, so it more often materializes when the body is unable to properly absorb vitamin B12 because of illness or old age. Incidentally, Vitamin B12 deficiency can cause weight loss, among other symptoms. Extreme cases can even result in permanent nerve damage if left untreated. A person diagnosed with Vitamin B12 deficiency will need to take supplements. These are most often taken as capsules or via intramuscular injections. Although vitamin B12 does not directly cause weight loss, it is still an essential nutrient that is needed by the body. It is important to get a sufficient amount of it and doing so will ensure better health, all around. California Culinary Colleges

Thursday, August 23rd, 2007

By Josh Riverside You know you would like to study culinary arts. Either you are fresh out of high school or looking to make a career change. One thing is for sure - food is your passion. You’ve always loved cooking and you’ve always loved California. California culinary colleges are topnotch and will help you fulfill your dream of making a name for yourself in the food industry. Here is some advice on finding the California culinary college that is best for you. First, decide what area of the culinary arts you would like to focus on. Would you like to focus on a particular cuisine? Would you like to be a pastry chef? Define your long-term goals as best as you can. If your dream is to own a bakery, it will probably be a good idea to focus on baking while you are in school. If you would like to own a restaurant, you need education that touches on all the aspects of becoming a restaurateur. After you decide on which areas to focus, compile a list of California culinary colleges that are your best bets. A good school will have several areas of focus. But, if you prefer a smaller school, there are many great colleges that specialize. A good reason to find a school that has more options is that it will be easier for you to switch your major if your goals change. When you do choose a culinary college, try to get a list of classes to take before you begin. Consider doing some reading and recipe-testing before you begin your education. The more you understand about cooking techniques and other aspects of the culinary world before you begin school, the better off you’ll be. Remember that even though culinary school can be hard work, if you choose the right one, you will get the kind of education you’ve always wanted. California Colleges provides detailed information on California Colleges, California Community Colleges, Northern California Colleges, California Junior Colleges and more. The Natural Way to Care for the Skin

Tuesday, August 21st, 2007

By Paul Ghossain People who care about the health of their skin usually use herbal skin care products. More and more people are embracing herbal skin care products each day. Herbal skin care products have become so popular that you can now find them in many clothing and grocery stores. Because of the popularity of herbal skin care products, many of the acclaimed manufacturers of chemical skin care products have added herbal products to their skin care lines. Herbs can now be widely found in everything from cleansers to moisturizers. Many people want to use them if for no other reason than that they are natural. Herbal use in ancient times The use of herbs for skin care dates back about as far as written history, around 3000 BC in Egypt. Egyptians used roses and fenugreek to prevent wrinkle formation. The Greeks later used cosmetics containing mint. In fact, most ancient cultures have recorded the application of herbs to their skin in an effort to achieve a beautiful complexion. Use of herbs backed up by studies Many modern scientific studies have evaluated and verified the healing, cleansing or protective properties of some herbs. Some studies have identified the herbal constituents that perform beneficial tasks on the skin. Manufacturers take these studies into consideration when formulating their herbal skin care products. One herb that is commonly included in herbal skin care products for acne is rose geranium. Rose geranium contains properties that function as an antimicrobial treatment. It is also sometimes used to treat various skin infections. More studies on herbal use for skin care needed There still needs to be a lot of scientific study done on many of the herbs used in herbal skin care products. However, there is little financial motivation to fund studies of these herbs, as their inclusion in skin care formulas cannot be patented. So most people who use these products use them based on what seems to work. Roses and chamomile are a couple of widely touted skin remedies found in herbal skin care products that remain understudied. However, the positive personal experiences of many people have to the wide use of roses and chamomile for skin care. Chamomile, for example, is touted for its ability to sooth the skin since the Middle Ages. Many people use it when they have a rash. Homemade herbal skin care products Herbal skin care products have become so popular that many people have learned to make their own herbal skin care treatments. There are now many books and guides available that describe in detail how to formulate various herbal treatments for specific skin conditions. Resisting Insulin Resistance

Monday, August 20th, 2007

By Guin Van Niekerk It seems that almost every day a new association between diet and health is discovered. Certain food groups have been shown in reliable studies to decrease the risk of various conditions; for example, the high lycopene content of tomatoes helps to prevent prostate cancer, and calcium-containing foods such as yoghurt and broccoli delay the onset of osteoporosis. Other foods have been shown to cause, or aggravate, particular conditions. People with high blood pressure are routinely advised to cut down on salt intake. Gout sufferers are all too aware of the impact that some foods, especially drinks like beer (even alcohol-free beer!) have on their joints. The problem with these food-health relationships, is that they are not very specific, or predictable. How many tomatoes must you eat, and for how long, for it to have a protective effect on your prostate? Assuming, of course, that you are a man and therefore would have one of these. And how much yoghurt and broccoli should you eat to help delay the onset of osteoporosis? Nobody seems to know the answers to these problems, and so it is generally recommended that we eat as much of the protective food types as we can, while avoiding the less favourable things like salt and saturated fats. Recommendations like these seem to be a bit too vague for my liking. In this era of precise measurements and percentages, it could be expected that someone would be able to prescribe a daily or weekly portion of the particular food group required to decrease the risk of having a condition by a precise percentage. But this is just not possible. Confounding factors such as genetics need to be taken into account; if you have a family history of an illness you may have a genetic predisposition to having the condition yourself, no matter what you do. And genetics is generally too complex a subject to be able to make very accurate predictions. So any recommendations regarding eating certain foods to prevent disease should read something like this: Eat such-and-such food, and you may be able to make a slight difference to your overall risk of developing the condition, unless your genes say otherwise, and who can tell if this is the case? Some prediction! However, there is one condition where lifestyle and diet will always have a predictable impact on its severity and course, and that is insulin resistance. What? you say. Never heard of it. And most people havent heard of it, despite the fact that it is one of the most prevalent conditions in the world today. It is more common than diabetes; in fact, insulin resistance is the cause of type 2 diabetes, and has been estimated to affect about one in four people. So what is insulin resistance? The answer is not a simple one: insulin resistance is a complex entity, which involves a spectrum of conditions ranging from excess weight around the waist, to type 2 diabetes mellitus. It is the single cause of conditions such as metabolic syndrome, polycystic ovarian syndrome and type 2 diabetes, and is strongly associated with high blood pressure, cholesterol abnormalities, gout, and most frighteningly, sudden death, especially in middle-aged women. In short, it is a medical time bomb. Its origins are not always clear-cut either. Insulin resistance tends to run in families although not everyone in the same family is necessarily equally affected. A brother may never show any symptoms of the illness, while his sister may have significant weight problems and go on to develop type 2 diabetes at the age of forty. Or vice versa. Why this happens is not always apparent, although diet and lifestyle do play very significant roles in the progression of the condition. Insulin resistance may also be acquired; in other words it develops in an individual with no family background of insulin resistance and its associated conditions. This usually occurs in people who are overweight for whatever reasons. It has been estimated that half of all people who are significantly overweight have insulin resistance! It may be because of this very obvious association between insulin resistance and excess weight that, despite the fact that insulin resistance is largely a genetic disorder, it is very responsive to dietary and lifestyle changes, especially those that result in significant (i.e. more than 2-5 kilograms) weight loss. Fantastic news for those who are not very fond of taking tablets! In fact, exercise and diet were shown by the Diabetes Prevention Program to be almost twice as effective as metformin (a drug that is known to reduce insulin resistance) at reducing the risk of progressing to type 2 diabetes, which is more or less the end result of insulin resistance. And these benefits occur whether the person affected was overweight or not at the beginning of the lifestyle modification program. Strangely enough, some people with insulin resistance do not have a weight problem by ordinary standards. Instead, they may have a completely normal body mass index, and the only sign of underlying insulin resistance may be a slight thickening around the waist area. Nevertheless, the end result of the appropriate dietary modification is the same an improvement in symptoms, and a longer, healthier life. In a world where people are becoming more interested and involved in taking control of their bodies and their health, this is excellent news. A do-it-yourself cure that really works! Having said all this, just a word of caution. Weight loss should be approached carefully. Conventional low calorie, low fat and high carbohydrate diets do not work very well for people with insulin resistance, and crash diets work well for nobody. An appropriate diet, a bit of mild exercise, and a slow, gentle loss of weight are all that is needed to make a huge difference to your health. And to the health of those around you. Please remember that family members of people with diabetes are likely to have insulin resistance too, and need to be made aware of this possibility. With insulin resistance and diabetes, prevention is always better than cure! Dr. Guin Van Niekerk qualified as a medical doctor at the University of Cape Town in 1997. It was while working a few years later as a general practitioner that she developed a strong interest in insulin resistance and its associated conditions. She subsequently ran a small metabolic syndrome clinic for her patients and discovered that the concept of insulin resistance was largely unknown to the public. Outdoor Bar Furniture

Monday, August 20th, 2007

By Seth Miller A large number of people drink, particularly when they are being social. Apart from drinking at home, people prefer to drink at restaurants, bars, pubs and discos. These establishments are licensed and have permits. A number of these setups have special outdoor seating arrangements. Manufacturers offer a wide variety of outdoor bar furniture that is designed especially for outdoors locations. This is vital as they are exposed to the elements at all times. Whether it is sunlight or evening dew, gradually outdoor bar furniture tends to decay if not cared for. Individuals who have gardens and host parties for friends and relatives often also make outdoor bar furniture purchases. They are available in traditional and contemporary designs. Outdoor bar furniture is offered as a complete range to suit different needs. It is a collective term that includes tables and chairs, drink cabinets, bar stools and liquor counters. They are made, keeping in mind a “bar theme” and may look inappropriate as dining or sit- out furniture. Outdoor bar furniture is available in wood, plastic and metal types. Outdoor wooden bar furniture can be protected with special oils and varnish. This helps prevent moisture absorption by different wood types. It is important to wash, wipe and dry outdoor bar furniture at regular intervals to guarantee adequate maintenance and upkeep. Plastic varieties are considered to be cost effective and durable. However, they are prone to fading over a period of time. These varieties may not offer an authentic “bar look” but can be combined with other furniture types to acquire a desired effect. Metal varieties, including cast and wrought iron designs, are a popular choice. They do not rust and their protective varnish does not wear off. They are available at leading furniture stores and can also be ordered online. Lasik Rochester New York

Friday, August 17th, 2007

By Damian Sofsian The University of Rochester Medical Center is probably the largest local resource in the Rochester area for lasik surgeons. Its website has a useful Find a Provider link to help you find eye surgeons who specialize in corneal surgery. Most of these surgeons are affiliated with the Strong Memorial Hospital. On the Find a Provider link, you should select Ophthalmology under specialty and Cornea/External Disease under subspecialty. You will then get a list of surgeons with their contact information. You can also check their medical credentials and find out who is accepting new patients. Outside of the University of Rochester, there are a few group and independent practices. While it is essential to choose a surgeon based on their level of experience and ability to perform the latest procedures, lasik is an expensive proposition for most people. Lasik is considered cosmetic surgery, and is therefore not covered under most health insurance plans. You can check with your employer if you are eligible to pay for lasik with pre-tax dollars through Flexible Spending Accounts. Alternatively, most hospitals and practices offer payment installment schemes. The cost for conventional lasik surgery at Strong Memorial Hospitals refractive surgery center is $ 1,900 per eye. Custom lasik is more expensive, costing approximately $ 2,400 per eye. These fees include follow-up visits up to one year. There is no re-treatment cost if you need additional surgery after custom lasik; the cost for re-treatment after conventional lasik is $ 200. Over 90 percent of people who have lasik surgery report improved vision after surgery. While lasik treats corneal refractive errors, it cannot treat the visual deficits that result from the natural aging process. Presbyopia is a loss in the ability of the eye to focus, and is caused by age-related changes to the lens of the eye. Courtroom FEA: FEA = Finite Element Analysis

Thursday, August 16th, 2007

By Steve Roensch As a product liability professional, it is important that you know what Finite Element Analysis (FEA) can do for you. If you don’t, your adversary might. Whether you serve plaintiffs, defendants or both, you’re probably already familiar with FEA. Simply put, if a loss, injury or death is due to something bending or breaking, FEA can help explain the failure. An experienced FEA expert can determine the stresses and displacements in the failed part. When compared to industry standards, earlier designs and competitive designs, this often identifies the cause of failure, and hence the responsible party. As in any field, your choice of an expert is important in making your case. It’s not unusual for an inexperienced FEA analyst to generate incorrect results; this is both a warning to the wise and a strategy for dealing with the other side’s expert. FEA results lend themselves to color plots and animations, making conveying the key concepts to the jury much easier. Many companies use FEA, for good reason. FEA of critical design components, be they in the early design stage or on the engineering change list, can greatly enhance the overall product quality. This is accomplished by ensuring that the design can meet deformation, stress, vibration and/or temperature specifications for specified worst case configurations. FEA can also reduce product cost significantly, especially if applied early in the design cycle. Analysis results identify critical areas which carry the bulk of stresses caused by deformation or vibration, as well as less important areas in which a material reduction may be possible. The number of prototypes required can usually be reduced. Finally, the cost of a field repair or replacement will usually be many times the cost of a finite element analysis. (Graphics for this article are available at www.finiteelement.com/newsletter/CourtroomFEA_Vol01.html) Steve Roensch is a mechanical engineering consultant with more than 20 years of professional experience.
