Pricing Experts - Who Are They?

Tuesday, November 27th, 2007

By Alain Meloche Pricing experts are a rarity in the marketing field. If firms cannot find exactly what they are looking for, the question becomes one of finding the best potential candidate. There are sub-specialties of pricing that correspond to the four Ps. Most companies have developed expertise that corresponds to these areas. Pricing expertise is missing in many organizations, partly because it lacks appeal to those who enjoy relationship building more than number crunching. Finance departments, while focused and expert at analysis can lack customer insight having had little professional contact with customers. Detail orientation often makes it difficult to imagine the impact of various pricing strategies on the business and industry. It is rare to come across someone who can conceptualize pricing models and their implications for the business on a grand scale, get right down to the detail and actually choose prices. Finally, the ideal candidate needs to communicate the justification for the pricing schemes to win the approval of the sales and marketing teams. There are even greater complications when one considers the expertise required for new product pricing. The more immense the product or service breakthrough, the more ambiguous is the pricing problem. This is because a completely new innovation lacks other comparable products against which to reference price. Pricing represents a huge risk that can make or break a new product introduction. Done incorrectly, it can open the doors for competitors to enter, eliminating the coveted first mover advantage. Your pricing candidate must be able to deal with uncertainty and be comfortable executing on educated guesses, backed by business acumen. An entrepreneurial spirit is an indicator of this potential, however, hard to find in a large corporation. Monsanto provides an example of excellent pricing for new products when it introduced its Round-up Ready seeds as it was able to gain significant market share by understanding how the value of its product could be translated into appropriate pricing. So, the ideal pricing candidate knows the industry, can see the big picture. Is interested in delving into details, understands customers and their issues, is an excellent communicator, has knowledge of pricing models and can deal with ambiguity, in cases where new product pricing is required. How do you find this Wonder Person? We suggest some solutions. Preferably, choose from a pool of internal people. This gets you over one hurdle- the person knows the business and industry. Next, is there a sales and marketing person who has an inclination to numbers? Conversely, is there anyone in finance who has a background in sales and marketing? The latter may be preferable since analytical skills are cultivated over time and the impact of various pricing models on the financial statements requires professional training such as that of an accountant; shareholders will be pleased to know that revenue management is in capable hands. Keep in mind that understanding customers can be largely intuitive and some of this intuition can be found in the right personality. Deficiencies may be resolved relatively quickly through a short stint on the sales side. This candidate probably has little pricing expertise in terms of knowledge of models and their consequences. To deal with the situation, there is a range of options and the choice will depend on urgency and budget constraints. On one hand, the internal candidate may be developed over years with the hope that s/he remains with the firm long enough to benefit from this investment. The learning process can receive a jumpstart for more immediate results. Waiting may damage revenue generation prospects. An example of such an approach was used by Roche which recruited a very experienced director who had not only been cycled through its finance and marketing and sales groups but also had spent a number of years in its European offices. Faced with new product pricing issues, we advise to jumpstart the learning process. Big pricing mistakes may result in huge losses, even to the point of a failed product launch. A jumpstart can take many forms. Seminars are offered by pricing consulting organizations and these may be customized to your specific requirements. Pricing organizations can help you get up to speed quickly. These are good solutions in the case of strict budgetary constraints. For firms that have larger budgets and would like to complete customized solutions to put them on the right path, pricing consultants can provide a wide range of services and solutions. Look for a consulting process that is cooperative such that the client team will be well versed in the pricing strategy after completion of an engagement. Look for an approach that will assist in the implementation of the strategy and the training of your people. Large companies such as IBM which have experience in training teams at their customers provide examples of large companies that have recognized the need to build pricing teams using such external expertise a described above. A small pricing department composed of employees with the range of expertise described above may be created. The advantage of this approach is that initially, team members can make up for each others deficiencies. All of them should be team players, good communicators, quick learners, and interested in expanding their capabilities. Someone who is highly competent at analytical work and financial modeling is needed. Another may be strong at software. Additionally required is a conceptual thinker with well-developed business acumen. As they work together, they will learn from each other and each will become competent pricing analysts. This allows individuals to make later career choices. Either they can stay or move on to related areas in the company. A few may decide to make pricing and longer-term career, but it is not to be expected. What is important is that they train their replacements so that hard won organizational pricing capability is not lost. The latter strategy requires much more coordination, including management expertise to set up and run the new team. There will be issues as to the responsibilities within and outside the team. How will the group fit into the new organization and how can you ensure that they are accepted and not bypassed? We advise a respected senior manager take on the task of creating the new group, acting as a sponsor and change manager who can sell the team to the rest of the organization and gain support for them. Sometimes, inviting third parties to evaluate firm requirements with respect to pricing lends credibility to later actions. Conclusion: search inside and train. ensure that learning is jumpstarted use outside groups for this ensure that new organization and pricing groups are not lost as new skills prompt employees to look elsewhere for work. Indian Matrimonial Sites

Monday, November 26th, 2007

By Samir Bajaj Indian Matrimonial Sites have been around for a long time but have gained popularity only of late. Their main function is to allow individuals or their parents to create a free profile for the intended groom or bride, and wait for prospective responses. Traditionally in the Indian culture this was accomplished, through news paper adds but now with the coming of the internet a lot of sites have cropped up catering to this market. These sites have taken on a dual purpose for Single Indians and their parents. Lets first take a look at how the person looking for match for him or herself views it. They post their add on one or more of these sites, with the aim of meeting and dating quite a few people before they decide on who they want to settle down with. The parents use in its traditional capacity which is to find matches for their son or daughter and then make a final selection very shortly after that. The dating and getting to know aspect is totally ignored by the parents and is supposed only take place after the couple has taken the final plunge. The interesting thing about this whole process , how the Indian youth of today are trying to satisfy their own modern views of dating and at the same time keep their traditionally minded parents at bay as well as pacified. How do they do this by informing their parents that they have joined a matrimonial site and are actively looking for a suitable mate for themselves. They in fact are dating quite a few people , an option that their parents would not usually tolerate. In essence they are getting the best of both worlds. The internet has been a god send for the Indian Youth of today. Health Benefits of Qi Gong

Saturday, November 24th, 2007

By James Chen There are a variety of health benefits that practitioners of qi gong can enjoy. Proponents of the exercises, also called “chi kung”, believe that following a regular exercise routine of qi gong can improve your health in a number of ways. The practice of qi gong is based on the belief that the body is innately equipped with the ability to maintain and heal itself, and that all that we have to do is to learn how to assist the body in doing this. The exercises of qi gong are designed to promote and restore the flow of life energy or vital energy, also called chi, throughout the body. If the flow of chi is restored to the optimum state, then the body can naturally fight and eliminate any illnesses or injuries. Qi gong can be used not only to cure illness and improve immune system function, but also to improve energy levels and vitality, make the practitioner feel younger and live longer, help to reduce stress and generate an overall sense of wellbeing. Different forms of qi gong are designed to perform different functions, so studying with a teacher is important in order to learn the correct sequences of exercises to create the optimum effect on your health. To understand the theory behind the beliefs surrounding qi gong, it is important to first recognize some of the fundamental differences that exist between Western and Eastern medicines. Western medicine accepts that certain illnesses and dysfunctions are incurable. However, Traditional Chinese Medicine disagrees. In this tradition, there is no such thing as an incurable disease, although a patient may reach a stage in a disease where, if they have been untreated, the damage is too severe to repair. So the key to using qi gong is to incorporate it as a daily practice in order to prevent any kind of illness or disease from reaching this stage. The belief that no disease is incurable comes from the idea that man is born in perfect condition, with the ability to remain in perfect operating order. However, as our bodies, our vehicles, move us through life, they experience certain kinds of damage that our lifestyles can generate. Poor diet, high levels of stress, general loss of awareness of our bodies and other lifestyle choices result in a dysfunction in the bodys natural ability to heal itself. Illness only results when one of our bodys complex physiological or psychological systems fails to work properly. These failures occur when the flow of chi energy is in some way impeded or blocked. Qi gong exercises work to free up these blockages so that the chi can flow naturally and freely to the needed locations. The energy restores and repairs damaged tissues, carries away toxins that the bodys cells and processes produce and keep the body generally vital and healthy. The focus of qi gong is on enhancing health and preventing illness, although many practitioners claim to have cured diseases such as cancer, asthma or diabetes that were previously thought to be incurable. James Chen is an expert Qigong practitioner and shares his knowledge of this ancient healing art at his site Qigong Secrets. Visit now to learn how to enjoy the health you deserve. Introduction to Traditional Chinese Medicine

Saturday, November 24th, 2007

By Hotaka Sutton Practitioners of Western style medicine are beginning to recognize the value of Chinese medicine. Here is an introduction to Chinese medicine for your edification. Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) is the name given to a system of medical practices that was developed over a period of several thousand years. It deals with the theories, diagnosis, and treatment of illness, but it does so from a completely different approach than Western Medicine. TCM views all of the processes of the human body as being interrelated and also in a state of constant interaction with the environment. It would tend to search for any sign of disharmony in the external and internal environment to arrive at the proper method to understand the cause of illness. Once this environmental cause is understood, it would suggest the proper way to treat the illness or to prevent it in the first place. There are several methods of treatment in TCM. The use of herbal medicine, acupuncture, and massage are common treatment methods. There is much more philosophical basis in Traditional Chinese Medicine than can be found in Western Medicine. The Yin/Yang is one such philosophical way of approaching medicine. This is reflected in the idea that illness results from a lack of balance in the body. The way to treat the disease is to restore balance. Other theories that are found in TCM are the five elements and the Meridian Theory. The five elements are wood, fire, earth, metal, and water. The idea behind the use of the five elements in TCM is again balance. The Meridian theory claims that the vital energy of the body, known as the qi, circulates along certain specific and interconnected channels within the body. The Meridian theory is the basis of acupuncture. Traditional Chinese Medicine developed from an older discipline that is known as Classical Chinese Medicine. Classical Chinese Medicine, or CCM, fell into disfavor after the Communist Government took control of mainline China. The cause of this disfavor was the spiritual and religious thrust of CCM. The cost of Western Medicine has proven too high to be able to reach the poorer areas of China, however, and the belief of the people in Chinese Medicine never really faltered. Eventually, the Government of China began to revisit CCM, and produced a new system that had a bit less reliance on spiritualism. This is what is now termed Traditional Chinese Medicine. The more Classical version is still widely practiced in Chinese areas outside of mainland China, and even there, the classical version has not entirely disappeared. Although there is a great deal of difference in all elements of TCM and Western Medicine from the approach to the treatment, there has been some cooperation between those trained in each system. In China today, both systems seem to work in more harmony. Chinese have no problem seeking Western treatments in cases of acute illness, but still tend to rely on TCM for the prevention of disease and the maintenance of good health. Oil Finishes - Tips For Creating The Perfect Finish on Your Woodturnings

Friday, November 23rd, 2007

By Steven Russell Overview Oil finishes are considered by many turners to be the ultimate woodturning finish. Among the easiest of all finishes to apply, oil finishes impart a close to the wood feeling that begs to be touched. In my woodturning demonstrations around the United States and in discussions with other turners via the Internet, no other subject has spawned more questions than finishing. In days long past, finishing was considered an art form - in and of itself, with the procedures and formulas jealously guarded by craft guilds. Today, few wood turners handcraft their own finishes from scratch. Literally hundreds of professionally formulated finishes are easily available, delivering varying levels of protection and lustre. However, some turners still prefer handcrafting their own signature finishes, achieving results that rival any commercial finish. Next to wax, oil finishes are the easiest of all finishes to apply. However, there is more to applying an oil finish than simply wiping it on and off. Oil finishes are a very popular finish for many woodturnings however, few oil finish products are specifically made for woodturnings. Therefore, much of the application information has been designed with traditional furniture finishing in mind. While some of the procedures for applying an oil finish to a woodturning or a piece of furniture may be the same, others are not. As wood turners, we are fortunate to be able to use our lathes in conjunction with our finishing endeavors. This is a significant advantage over the traditional finishing of cabinet, or furniture case goods. The lathe can easily transform laborious and tedious activities into relatively quick and simple procedures. Tips On Achieving A Perfect Oil FinishOil finishes tend to magnify any damaged areas on the underlying wood surface. Therefore, your surface must not contain bruised or torn grain areas, or they will appear much darker than the undamaged wood when the finish is applied. Sand the surface of the wood to at least 600-grit metric. If your turning is a gallery quality piece, sand to 2,000grit metric or higher. After each grit change, reverse your lathe and sand in the opposite direction. When you have completed sanding with your final grit, lightly wet the surface of the wood to raise the grain. When dry, re-sand to remove any raised grain fibers. Remove any accumulated sanding dust or grit lodged in the pores with compressed air, or a tack rag before applying your finish. To insure that the surface contains no defects, wipe on a thin coat of Odorless Mineral Spirits and closely examine the surface. Damaged areas will appear darker than the surrounding wood. If you find an area that needs attention, re-sand and prepare the surface for finishing as stated above. Applying The Finish Apply the initial coat of finish to the surface to the wood by flooding it on with a folded paper towel. Keep working the oil into the surface for 3-5 minutes. Pay close attention to any areas that absorb more finish and appear dry, or dull and apply more finish to these areas. Reapply the finish as necessary to insure that the surface stays wet during the rub-in process. If you are using a polymerised oil finish, the application time will be significantly less than with a traditional penetrating oil finish. When your initial rub-in is completed, use two pieces of clean paper towel, one in each hand, to remove any excess finish. Pay particular attention to accumulated oil in detail areas like textures, or beads. A short blast of compressed air in these areas will assist in removal of any excess finish. Watch for possible bleed-out of the finish from the wood pores and remove any that appears before it cures. Some woods with large pores are very prone to bleed-out such as Oaks, Walnut and Ash. Depending on the particular species and amount of finish applied, this bleed-out may occur for up to four hours or more after application of the finish coat. Before applying the second and subsequent coats of finish, lightly sand the surface with the fine grit of sandpaper or synthetic wire wool. Some turners prefer to wet sand at this point, especially when working past 1200-grit. Buffing The Cured Finish When you have applied your last coat of finish, allow the surface to fully cure before buffing. Once the finish has cured, you can use a cutting compound on a rotary buffing head, or proceed directly to a cloth buffing wheel to smooth and perfect the surface finish. If you will be buffing the piece, you can charge your wheel with Tripoli or White Diamond compound to increase the effectiveness of the buff. Most oil finishes also respond well to dry buffing with plain cotton, or flannel wheels. The speed at which to buff depends on several factors including the specific finish used, compound used if any on the buffing wheel and the structure of the buffing wheel. If you are a new to buffing oil finishes, set your lathe to 1,750 RPM’s. If this proves inefficient, gradually increase the speed of your lathe, or the buffing wheel until the buff cuts the surface of the finish effectively. Although oil finishes may require several applications to achieve a sufficient build, the resulting surface can be provocative and visually spectacular. Through the years at gallery showings and art shows that I have participated in, the pieces that were finished with oils were always among the most popular with visitors to my booth. There is something about the feel of a finely buffed oil finish that is quite, irresistible. About The Author Steven Russell is a professional artist, demonstrator and writer. How to Defend Your Marketing Budget

Thursday, November 22nd, 2007

By Nancy E. Schwartz Management’s first response to a tight budget is often to reduce expenditures across the organization. After all, that’s the best way to balance the budget. Every department suffers equally. Right? Wrong! Although it may seem right (politically) to accept this decision, it’s the wrong move to make. In the long run, accepting a significant budget cut will harm your organization. When a nonprofit cuts marketing, it cuts off one of the hands that feed it. Even worse, marketing and communications are often cut more than other areas. Our work is sometimes perceived as being expendable, rather than recognized as a critical means of generating revenue, raising awareness, etc. That’s what you have to point out as diplomatically as possible. Rather than taking a defensive position when faced with budget cuts, proactively respond to your leadership’s challenges with either or both of these proposals: Leave our budget untouched, and we will increase X by X in the next fiscal year. Even better, if you will increase our budget by X percent, we’ll increase X by an additional X percent. Let the marketing and communications team work with the current budget for the next two years, and we’ll deliver an X percent increase in revenues (donor and/or earned income) in that time. Of course, these strategies require your marketing and communications team to report on concrete results, proving the value your efforts bring to the organization. Examples include: Direct Marketing (email and mail) Response rate. Dollars earned per dollar spent (return on investment, or ROI). Media relations: Development of media relationships. Coverage by media type (newspaper, magazine, Web, broadcast). Public Speaking: Number of speaking engagements and presentations (and audience count). Whatever you do, don’t just give in to a proposed budget cut for your department. Consider the options with as much creativity as you bring to your marketing work. Then shape your strategy and come back with a creative solution that will let you and your colleagues continue to build the bottom line. Good luck! Nancy E. Fake Weight Loss Programs and Pills: Is Your Weight Loss Program Safe and Effective?

Wednesday, November 21st, 2007

By Jasdeep Singh In this age being ignorant is like committing a crime. With so much of knowledge around you, following a trend blindly doesn’t confirm the fact that you are intelligent. But the catch here is, GO BY RIGHT KNOWLEDGE. No doubt, internet is flooded with the wrong knowledge and myths that leads you nowhere, but it isn’t hard enough to figure out the pearl in the ocean. Every now and then, we see some supplements or pills making tall claims which they down the line do not seem to validate. We will soon establish as we go on reading this article that there is absolutely no substitute for eating healthy and sweating out. In US, where weight loss has been a part of national consciousness for three decades, several studies have been done to evaluate the effectiveness of various weight loss aids. The major reason why most of these aids escape regulation is because they are branded as “food supplements” to escape the Drugs and Cosmetics Act that regulates the sale of medicine. Here are some findings:- 1) Starch Blockers: One of the most stupid ways to lose weight, they claimed to block the digestion of starch. Not only is the claim unproven but the users have complained of diarrhea, vomiting, nausea and stomach pains. 2) Glucomannan: It also failed on the FDA’s yardstick. It promised to reduce your appetite by filling up your stomach but there seem to be no evidence to support it. Glucomannan is derived from the root of a japanese plant name konjac. 3) Spirulina: It is a species of blue-green algae containing some essential nutrients and is pretty safe but again, its effectiveness is still questionable. 4) Magnetic Diet Pills: The US federal trade commission has brought legal action against marketers of these pills. These pills contain a fibre that is been considered to act like a fat-magnet which consumes up to five times its weight in dietary fat. Sorry, it failed miserably! 5) Weight Loss Shakes: MAY BE an answer for short-term weight loss but users have gained weight immediately once they stop using these shakes. These shakes are diet drinks powdered formulas and are substituted for meals. Not only this way to lose weight in unhealthy but also short-term. 6) Bulking Agents: These fibre and gum products promises to control appetite be absorbing liquid and swelling in stomach, thus reducing hunger. But the fact is these bulking agents are indigestible. They can be harmful to the body causing obstructions in the intestines, stomach or esophagus. —> To learn more about other fake weight loss programs and pills and how to differentiate between genuine weight loss programs and fake weight loss programs, visit http://www.weightloss-health.com/Fake%20Weight%20Loss.htm Random Tip: Try the much improved Atkins Diet addressing your mental strength too with immense motivational tips at http://www.weightloss-health.com/weight_loss_head.htm About the Author Jasdeep: for http://weightloss-health.com/ your complete and most comprehensive family guide on Health. Outrageous Testimonials Rule

Tuesday, November 20th, 2007

By Audrey Burton The other day I was giving a talk on sales, and a hypnotherapist asked me how to “convince” visitors to her website to trust her, and call her. One way to do this is by having other people (3rd parties) tell the visitor how incredible she is. These statements are called testimonials, and are one of the most powerful components of an effective marketing message. Thanks to technology, you can pepper your website with testimonials in several formats: 1. Written 2. Audio 3. Video If you are not currently using testimonials, start with easy ones. Email your best clients and ask them to write a testimonial for you. This is often difficult for the client, as they don’t always know how to put their feelings concisely into a powerful statement. They want to, but they need your guidance. You can write it for them and ask them to simply edit it most people really appreciate this as it saves them time. This is NOT the time to be shy or humble!! Write it from their perspective and really rave about how great you and your product are, and the dramatic results. Be shameless and outrageous! The more outrageous you are, the more likely you are to provoke that critical emotional connection, causing the reader to connect with your message and make a purchase. You can also give the client a list of questions to answer to help them create their own testimonial. Be very specific and benefits oriented. Remember the point of this work to motivate a visitor to keep reading, to ask for more information from you, to make a purchase. The testimonial, while about the past client, really needs to address the wants and needs of the prospect! Here’s an example from an attendee of my most recent group program: “I think you are great and really know your stuff! I also know that it’s up to the person to take your information and do something with it! And you provide that information very personally, clearly, and motivationally!” Heather Dubin, Certified Permanent Makeup Artist Tarzana, CA Audio and video clips from your clients can also really speed up the relationship-building process. They are a little more technically challenging, but most web developers can easily do this for you. You can put written testimonials in your written content on your site, as well as grouped together on one page. You can put them on your home page, too, but if you plan to include audio and/or video testimonials, the home page is a fabulous place for those. I also recommend putting the clients’ pictures, full names and geographic locations with some of the better testimonials, so the visitor can really identify with them. Separating these from the rest of the text by putting them in a box draws more attention to them. Scroll down about half way to see an example here: http://www.amarketingstrategy-plan.com I recently added two very lengthy testimonials to my main site as Case Studies. Go to my site, to the case studies page in coaching to see them. These statements give me the opportunity to showcase more about the process of what I do in greater detail, further deepening my relationships with my visitors. It also provides my clients the opportunity to expose their businesses in another location on the web. As you can see, there are several options in using testimonials, but one thing on which all the marketing experts agree testimonials are extremely effective! Let me know if I can help you with yours. On-Line Dating - Part 2- Insider Secrets of Success

Monday, November 19th, 2007

By Patricia Little The overall topic of online dating had to try hard to gain acceptance with everyone from the respectable members of the community. It has had to work even harder to gain a small level of acceptance for anyone more sophisticated. Somehow it has always had to fight off an identity that was never intended. This is simply a more focussed way of meeting people but through the computer rather than wasting numerous evenings at dubious addresses spending money on clothes, hair and drinks to just get started. Most households own a computer these days and it has many more useful functions than the television or the phone. It has become a recognized and written about challenge for twelve year olds to meet people of similar interest in the current season. It must be assumed, incorrectly that the rest of us have a broad band of interesting contacts. The truth is there are often challenges in finding a willing head to share a conversation holding more meaning than the cost of the electricity bill. The issue of safety and security has become a necessary focus in recent years. More and more are inclined to stay indoors, try to develop a garden, maybe even put on weight with more time for cooking but all are missing out on essential quality interaction with people. Unique skills need to be developed and shared and it would be a shame not to share some of this with equally qualified or train those in need. An on-line dating service could provide a sharing of ideas with the possibility of extending the contact. 3 Supplements Proven to Fight Fatty Liver Disease

Sunday, November 18th, 2007

By Nicole Cutler The condition fatty liver is exactly as it sounds an excess of fat in the liver cells. Among its many other duties, the liver is responsible for cleaning and filtering the blood to increase circulation, and this buildup of fat impedes its ability to do so. Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (also referred to as NAFLD) has become the most common liver ailment in the United States. Fatty liver is caused by a number of factors, including obesity and high blood sugar, and can cause more serious conditions such as diabetes and cirrhosis. Those who are obese and maintain a sedentary lifestyle are often at a higher risk for both NAFLD and diabetes. While there currently arent medical treatments available, you can take steps to protect yourself from this condition by adding a few valuable supplements to your daily nutritional regimen. Omega-3 fatty acids can provide much-needed health benefits, such as reducing pain and inflammation, and even lowering a persons risk for developing cardiovascular disease, something thats important to everyone, but even more so to someone with fatty liver disease. Southern Ginseng is another supplement that can offer support for NAFLD, as it has been shown in studies to reduce liver enzyme levels. Quite possibly the most important nutritional supplement for supporting and protecting the liver is milk thistle (silymarin). Clinical studies have demonstrated milk thistles ability to protect liver cells by acting as a detoxifier and blocking the entrance of harmful substances, as well as reducing enzyme levels. In addition to incorporating these supplements into your diet, you may wish to consider a gradual weight loss program to minimize the extra stress to your liver.
